Intonation

Beginning Level

The student is rarely in tune, shows difficulty adjusting pitches.
Basic Level

Sometimes the student is in tune but has frequent problems adjusting pitches resulting in intonation problems that detract from the performance.
Proficient Level

The student generally plays in tune and shows a sense of how to adjust pitches. Occasional intonation problems do not detract from the performance.
Advanced Level

The student consistently plays in tune and sensitively adjusts pitches in relation to preceding pitches. Intonation problems are rarely heard resulting in a beautifully resonant performance.
Tone

Beginning Level

Tone lacks clarity, focus and beauty.
Basic Level

Tone is usually clear and pleasant but occasionally distorts due to inconsistencies in tone production.
Proficient Level

The tone has consistent focus, beauty, and clarity with few distortions.
Advanced Level

Tone is exceptionally rich. Full, open and resonant, focused, clear and beautiful in all ranges at all dynamic levels.
Tempo

Beginning Level

Tempo fluctuates a lot. Frequent rushing and dragging.
Basic Level

Tempo is different from the printed tempo markings, resulting in inappropriate tempos.
Proficient Level

Tempo approaches the printed tempo markings, yet the performed tempo does not detract.
Advanced Level

Tempo is accurate and consistent with the printed tempo markings. Phrasing and articulation are approached in sensitivity to the tempo.
Rhythmic Accuracy

Beginning Level

There are many wrong rhythm figures that detracted from the overall performance. Student was unable to complete passages.
Basic Level

There are some wrong rhythm figures, included short continuous sections of imprecision.
Proficient Level

A few wrong rhythm figures included minor continuous sections of imprecision. Did not detract from overall performance.
Advanced Level

No rhythm errors, overall accurate performance.
Melodic/Harmonic Accuracy

Beginning Level

There are many wrong notes that substantially detracted from the overall performance. Student was unable to complete passages.
Basic Level

There are some wrong notes that detracted, at times, from the overall performance.
Proficient Level

A few wrong notes that did not detract from the overall performance.
Advanced Level

No note errors, overall accurate performance.
Articulation

Beginning Level

Articulation was not correct or present.
Basic Level

Articulation was inconsistent.
Proficient Level

Articulation was clear. Minor infrequent inconsistencies do not detract from musical character.
Advanced Level

Articulation was consistent. Accents were clearly articulated and pitches were focused.
Dynamics

Beginning Level

Very little if any dynamic contrast.
Basic Level

Some effort made to address dynamic contrast.
Proficient Level

Consistent attention to dynamics demonstrated. Overall effect is musical. At times tone quality is distorted as dynamics change.
Advanced Level

Consistent attention to dynamics demonstrated. The student's range of dynamics creates many levels of intensity, each appropriate for the music. Tone quality remains intact at all times.
Phrasing

Beginning Level

Very little if any phrasing present.
Basic Level

Some effort made to address phrasing.
Proficient Level

Consistent attention to phrasing demonstrated. Overall effect is musical.
Advanced Level

All necessary techniques and musical understanding for phrasing is used at a high level of musical performance.
Posture

Beginning Level

Poor posture
Basic Level

Student gives some effort to have correct posture but fails to maintain consistent good posture throughout the performance.
Proficient Level

Student attempts to have correct posture but creates tension in sound. Some inconsistencies in posture.
Advanced Level

Ideal posture demonstrated. Student is poised and demonstrates pride without having overly stiff posture.
Scales

Beginning Level

No ability to play any scales by memory
Basic Level

Student makes many mistakes so scale cannot be performed
Proficient Level

Student makes a few mistakes but scale can be performed by memory
Advanced Level

Student plays scale in a fluid manner with no mistakes
Sight reading

Beginning Level

Student cannot play selection at all
Basic Level

Student makes several melodic and rhythmic mistakes on selection
Proficient Level

Student makes a few mistakes on selection which did not detract from the overall performance
Advanced Level

Student played piece without any melodic or rhythmic mistakes paying attention to dynamics and articulation
