The topic is clear with many details that are interesting to the reader.

The topic is powerful and gives the reader vivid images. The poet expresses a specific theme.

Are these the best words to use?

Level One

Words are dull and confusing, making the meaning of the poem unclear.
Level Two

Words are ordinary.
Level Three

Words are used correctly and a few powerful words are present. Words support the main idea.
Level Four

Words are powerful and bring images to the mind of the reader.
Voice

Can I "hear" the author?

Level One

The writer seems uninterested in the topic.
Level Two

The writer is starting to find a voice.
Level Three

The writer seems interested in the writing and attempts to give the reader some emotion.
Level Four

The writer speaks powerfully, revealing what he/she thinks or feels. The reader feels a strong connection to the poem and the poet.

Does the poem sound fantastic when read aloud?

Level One

The main idea is hard to find and the poem has no rhythm.
Level Two

The writing does not flow, and the main idea is confusing.
Level Three

The writer uses a consistent rhythm.
Level Four

The poem has a great flow and rhythm. This poem could be a chart topping song if put to music.
