Criteria
	Advanced 5 pts	Proficient 4 pts	Basic 3 pts
Singing	Advanced Student not only sings in tune, but also demonstrates excellent tone quality for his/her age.	Proficient Student sings diatonic melody in tune using an appropriate voice.	Basic Student uses a speaking voice or sings more than 50% of the pitches incorrectly.
Playing Instruments	Advanced Student can play musical patterns on pitched and unpitched instruments above their grade level.	Proficient Student can play age-appropriate musical patterns on pitched and unpitched instruments.	Basic Student is unable to play age-appropriate musical patterns on pitched and unpitched instruments.
Rhythm/Melody	Advanced Student is not only correct, but also performs the pattern fluently.	Proficient Student performs the pattern correctly without help from teacher.	Basic Student cannot perform pattern without help from the teacher.
Read/Notate	Advanced Student is able to name, define, and write musical symbols above their grade level.	Proficient Student is able to name, define, and write age appropriate musical symbols.	Basic Student is unable to identify, define, or write age appropriate musical symbols.
Compose/Improvise	Advanced Student is able to write or improvise creative pieces of music in various styles showing creativity above most students.	Proficient Given a framework, student can compose or improvise music and perform it correctly.	Basic Student has great trouble composing or improvising music, and needs much help from the teacher.
