Construction (32%)

Poor

Boat floats for at least 30 seconds and moves forward at least 20 cm (but less than half the length of the trough)
Fair

Boat floats for the entire testing period or a minimum of 60 seconds, and moves forward between 20 cm and half the length of the trough.
Good

Boat floats for entire testing period and moves forward at least 3/4 length of the trough.
Excellent

Boat floats for entire testing period and moves forward the full length of the trough.
Drawing (4%)

Poor

Drawing is a simple sketch with minimal dimensions and labels. Incorrect units used.
Fair

Drawing is done carefully, using a straight edge, with minimal dimensions and/or labels. Some errors in units.
Good

Drawing is done neatly using a straight edge, with basic dimensions and appropriate labels. All or most units are correct.
Excellent

Drawing is professionally done, with sufficient labels and dimensions. All units are correct.
Calculations (8%)

Poor

Only one of the three measurements is completed and/or quantities are given without calculations or other supporting evidence.
Fair

Two of the three measurements are completed with calculations or other supporting evidence.
Good

All three measurements are completed, however there are minor errors in calculations/supporting evidence.
Excellent

All three measurements are completed, with no errors in calculations/supporting evidence.
Design Paper (36%)
Key Elements(12%)

Poor

One or more physics elements missing; significant errors in definition; and/or poor/no explanation of importance in design and function
Fair

A minimum of three physics principles properly defined; may have some minor errors; importance in design and function of boat partially explained.
Good

All physics elements included; properly defined with only minor errors; importance in design and function of boat partially explained.
Excellent

All physics elements included; properly defined; importance in design and function of boat fully explained.
Difficulties Encountered (8%)

Poor

Difficulties described but fully explained and/or not remedied in an effective way.
Fair

Some description of difficulties encountered, minor errors or minimal discussion of physics principles involved and explanation of remedies.
Good

Detailed description of difficulties encountered, minor errors or minimal discussion of physics principles involved, and explanation of remedies.
Excellent

Detailed description of difficulties encountered, physics principles involved, and explanation of remedies.
Redesign Suggestions (8%)

Poor

Suggests minimal future improvements and/or does not provide reasonable (or any) reasoning for choice(s).
Fair

S
Good

Suggests future improvements on design; provides partial reasoning.
Excellent

Suggests future improvements on design and fully explains reasoning for suggestions.
Format and Style (4%)

Poor

One or more components missing; difficult to follow; choppy; clearly not proofread
Fair

All components included; some errors present but do not disrupt flow or understanding of text.
Good

All components included; some difficulty in flow.
Excellent

All components included; no errors. Logical and easily understandable language and flow.
