Prewriting
Excellent
Completed all portions of all graphic organizers. Information was correct and clear
Fair
Completed most of the organizers and the information was mostly correct but a little hard to understand
Needs Improvement
Most of the graphic organizers were NOT completed and the information was not correct or easy to understand.
Little or No Evidence
No effort to complete graphic organizers, or missing from submission.
Revising/Editing
Excellent
Students showed their own and their peer corrections on their rough draft. Significant improvements were made to the final draft of their essay. The content was clear and there were not many spelling, capitalization, and puncuation errors.
Fair
Students did not make their own corrections on their rough draft but their peer corrections were included. The final draft was better than the rough draft. The paper was a little unclear and there were a few spelling, capitalization, and puncuation errors.
Needs Improvement
There were very few corrections on the rough draft. The final draft was about the same as the rough draft. The paper was not clear and there were several spelling, capitalization, and puncuation errors.
Little or No Evidence
No effort to make corrections.
Introductory & Concluding Paragraph
Excellent
Introduction is well developed, starts with a question, exclamation, or dialogue. Grabs the reader's attention. Concluding paragraph focuses the reader's attention back on the topic and ties the paragraph together.
Fair
Introduction is starting to develop. It grabs the reader's attention. The concluding paragraph summarizes the topic, but fails to give the reader a sense of finality.
Needs Improvement
Introduction is not developed, shows no evidence of following format described, and lacks the ability to entice the reader to continue. Concluding paragraph leaves the reader "hanging" with no "end" to the topic.
Little or No Evidence
There is no introduction, the paper just "starts in the middle of a concept" and there is no ending to the paper. Topic is not identified clearly.
Supporting Paragraphs
Excellent
Paragraphs begin with a topic sentence, have sentences that support the main idea, and end with a concluding sentence that ties the paragraph up.
Fair
Paragraph has an underdeveloped topic sentence with sentences that show some evidence of supporting the topic. Concluding sentence doesn't really finalize the paragraph.
Needs Improvement
Paragraphs have no apparent topic, lack supporting evidence, and do not end with concluding sentences.
Little or No Evidence
There are random sentences that are seemingly unconnected and do not support the topic.
Conventions
Excellent
Sentences are capitalized and have correct punctuation. Proper nouns are capitalized, commas are used correctly, and grammar is appropriate for the level of paper.
Fair
Most sentences begin with capital letters and end with correct punctuation. Some use of commas within the paper are demonstrated correctly and most proper nouns are correctly capitalized.
Needs Improvement
Sentences do not start with capital letters, there is no clear beginning or end to sentences, and very little punctuation is demonstrated properly.
Little or No Evidence
Essay resembles one giant paragraph or sentence with no punctuation, capital letters, or grammatical accuracy.
