The author "gets to the point" effectively.
Word Usage

Does writer use vocabulary appropriate to the essay and the tone of the essay?

Poor

Word usage is informal and/or inappropriate to the essay with the use of slang, elementary or inappropriate word choice, and the use of contractions.
Fair

Word usage is appropriate but lacks sophistication or a scholarly approach expected in word choice for this essay.
Good

Word usage is appropriate and scholarly but does not qualify as excellent.
Excellent

Word usage is appropriate for the essay and reflects sophistication on the part of the writer. Diction is sophisticated, using mature word selection to describe the relationship between characters. Syntax indicates a variety of sentence types.
understanding of theme and texts

Does the essay reflect a thorough and accurate understanding of the argument and a in-depth analysis of the two novels?

Understanding of theme and/or texts is minimal. It is clear the author does not know what s/he is talking about. Reflects a superficial or incomplete reading of one or both texts or a failure to clearly prove the thesis.

Understanding of theme and/or texts is inconsistent. Reflects reading on a superficial level.
Good

Understanding of theme and texts is appropriate but could be taken one step farther as it does not qualify as excellent.
