Topic Sentence	Poor Nowhere in the first three sentences is there an indication of where the writer stands on the issue.	Fair The writer has a topic sentence, but the wording is passive and does not make it clear where the writer stands on the issue.	Good Within the first two sentences of the essay there is a strong statement indicating clearly where the writer stands on the issue.
Opinions and evidence	Poor The writer does not have a strong opinion, and there is no evidence or facts.	Fair The writer expresses an opinion but uses only one or no sources of evidence/facts to support the opinion.	Good The writer expresses a strong opinion and backs it up with at least two sources of fact or evidence for support.
Voice (6+1)	Poor The writer expresses no voice as learned in lessons. No passion or conviction.	Fair The writer expresses a passive voice without much conviction. I am not convinced the writer feels strongly about the issue.	Good The writer is obviously passionate about the issue and has a strong voice. Writes with authority.
