Arrives fully prepared with notes on reading, observations and has questions prepared. Thorough research and comprehension of the topic are evident.
Engaged

Exhibits cursory level of preparation. Minimal research conducted about topic.
Not Engaged

Exhibits little evidence of having read or thought about the topic or research.
Quality of Contribution

The ability to add to class discussions meaningfully and appropriately.

Actively Engaged

Comments are relevant and reflect an understanding of assigned material(s); previous remarks of other students; and insights about the assigned material.

Comments frequently help move the class discussion forward to a deeper understanding of the topic.
Engaged

Comments are sometimes irrelevant, show a lack of preparation, or indicate a lack of attention to previous remarks from students or instructors.

Comments sometimes advance the conversation, but sometimes do little to move it forward appropriately.
Not Engaged

Comments reflect little understanding of either the assignment or any previous remarks made within the class discussion.

Comments do not advance the conversation or are actively detrimental to it.
