News Story The student will create a feature article.

Engages the reader Creates reader interest by selecting an interesting topic.	Publishable Opens with a relevant introduction of several paragraphs that engages the reader with a specific situation or description before moving on to the main thesis (nut graph).	Needs Editing Opens with a short lead of only a sentence or two, which is interesting enough that the reader does not mind continuing with the article. Main thesis is apparent.	Re Do It Opens with a reference to the topic which may not be of particular or appropriate interest; main idea is not clear.
Builds content Develops the news story with facts and details	Publishable Uses significant numbers of strategy to develop content, such as, sequence and transitions; quotations; descriptive language/vocabulary (to enhance mental images of people and places); drama; sensory details.	Needs Editing Uses some strategies to develop content and heighten interest.	Re Do It Content is not developed effectively; writing does not engage the reader.
Establishes a sense of closure Wraps up story or investigation	Publishable Creates a satisfying ending by summarizing main points; if investigative report, ends with a global question that may suggest or encourage further exploration.
