African Dance Sequence 
Students will be assessed on various performance quality elements while applying african dance technique. Students must be able to clearly identify the musicality through the movement.

Knowledge of choreography

Execution of the moves tell a story through communication and is all done in sync.

Beginning

Demonstrates some knowledge of choreography, but unsure of movements. Often hesitates/ watches others; makes several errors
Developing

Demonstrates knowledge of choreography. Keeps up with group. Some errors, causing brief pause in performance.
Proficient

Demonstrates good knowledge of choreography. Keeps up with group. Few errors, however it does not interfere with performance.
Exemplary

Demonstrates excellent knowledge of the choreography. Is completely rhythmically accurate.
Technical Skills

The movements clearly demonstrate African characteristics.

Beginning

Basic understanding of the characteristics (ie. isolations, rooted to the floor, polycentric, polyrhythmic) demonstrated in performance. Several technical errors are made while performing.
Developing

Dance performed with attention to most details of the characteristics, but hasn't attained proficiency in African Dance dance style yet. Some technical errors.
Proficient

Dance performed with attention to details of the characteristics has attained proficiency in African dance style.
Exemplary

Dance performed with great attention to quality of movement, body position, characteristics Also demonstrates an excellent understanding of African Dance dance style.
Performance Skills

Projection of eye contact and facial expressions with the class and teacher. The dancer is confident with movements.

Beginning

The dancer is generally focused, but only some attempt made to communicate with others on stage or audience.
Developing

The dancer communicates with other dancers and audience through eye contact and facial and body expression. Occasionally loses focus.
Proficient

The dancer communicates with other dancers and audience through eye contact and facial and body expression. Is able to engage the audience.
Exemplary

The dancer creates a believable character on stage and is able to engage the audience completely throughout their performance.
Rhythm/Tempo

Staying on count and with the beats of the music.

Beginning

Attempts to keep a rhythm, but gets off beat and speeds up or falls behind often. Doesn't follow beat in music.
Developing

Shows a basic understanding of tempo and beat, but falls behind and/or speeds up in places or makes errors in rhythm.
Proficient

Accurate in beat, tempo, rhythms of dance sequences throughout the dance.
Exemplary

Shows a complete understanding of tempo and beat and stays on rhythm throughout the dance.
