Speech is slow and often hesitant and irregular. Some sentences may be left uncompleted, but the student is able to continue.

Speech is mostly smooth but with some hesitation and unevenness.
Excellent
Speech does not appear strained and is reasonably smooth and well-paced, using linking words and self-correction strategies where appropriate.

Student's vocabulary is inadequate to express their ideas properly, which hinders their responses.
Needs Improvement
Student's vocabulary is adequate to express general meaning, but may sound repetitive and be unable to express nuance.

Student's vocabulary is adequate to express their ideas and displays good knowledge of vocabulary learnt in class.
Excellent
Rich usage of vocabulary learned both in and beyond the class.
Grammar

Only the simplest of grammatical structures are used, with frequent mistakes, for example with tenses. Communication is hindered as a result.
Needs Improvement
Student is able to express their ideas and responses adequately but often displays inconsistencies with sentence structure and tenses.
Good
Student is able to use a variety of grammatical structures but sometimes makes mistakes.
Excellent
Good grasp of even fairly complex structures that have been previously learnt. Grammar mistakes are few and are often those that native speakers would make in conversation.
Pronunciation
Poor
Student's pronunciation causes severe problems in understanding, often requiring multiple repetitions.
Needs Improvement
Student's pronunciation can be a bit unclear at times, but with only occasional repetition required.
Good
Pronunciation is clear overall but may still have some systemic problems, such as /θ/ -> /s/.
Excellent
Student may still have a noticeable accent, however pronunciation is clear and easy to understand, causing no strain to the examiner.
Comprehension
Poor
Student has difficulty understanding the questions and topics being discussed, hindering their ability to answer.
Needs Improvement
Student frequently requires repetition and rephrasing of questions from the examiner, but is still able to answer.
Good
Student may require occasional repetition of questions from the examiner, but this is rare.
Excellent
Student is able to comprehend and respond competently to all of the questions and topics being discussed.
Range
Poor
Student does not provide enough information to answer the questions adequately.
Needs Improvement
Student answers the questions directly but makes no attempt to provide information beyond the minimum asked for.
Good
Student answers the questions beyond the bare minimum, however the information provided may go slightly off-topic.
Excellent
Student shows creative use of language and is able to "talk around" the questions without straying too far off topic.
