This rubric will help to assess how well a student is able to perform the assigned lesson. It also assesses how well prepared a student is for the lesson in regard to having all of the materials needed.

Hand Position/Technique-Sticking

1

The student is unable to use proper hand position even after constant reminders. The student shows little to no control of the sticks during performances.

The student is SOMETIMES using proper hand position, but still needs MANY reminders. The student shows control of the sticks SOME of the time during performances.

The student is MOSTLY using proper hand position, but still needs an occasional reminder. The student shows control of the sticks MOST of the time throughout the performances.

The student is using proper hand position throughout the entire lesson. The student shows consistent control of the sticks throughout all performances.
Steady Beat/Rhythmic Precision

The student is not able to play with a steady beat throughout the majority of the assigned lesson. There are 5 or more rhythmic mistakes in many of the exercises in the assigned lesson. The student may not have been able to complete many of the exercises.

The student plays with a steady beat throughout SOME of the assigned lesson.SOME rhythms are played accurately but there may be 3-4 mistakes in some of the exercises in the assigned lesson.

The student plays with a steady beat throughout MOST of the assigned lesson. MOST rhythms are played accurately but there may be 1-2 mistakes in some of the exercises in the assigned lesson.

The student plays with a steady beat throughout the entire assigned lesson. All rhythms are played accurately from beginning to end of each exercise in the assigned lesson.
Rudiment Execution/Precision

The student is NOT able to execute rudiments accurately throughout the assigned lesson. The student lacks the understanding of the rudiments that have been assigned. (Please refer to pages 82-83 in the lesson book.)

The student is able to execute rudiments SOMEWHAT accurately but without precision throughout the assigned lesson. (Please refer to pages 82-83 in the lesson book.)

The student is able to execute MOST rudiments accurately and with precision throughout MOST of the assigned lesson. (Please refer to pages 82-83 in the lesson book.)

The student is able to execute all rudiments accurately and with precision throughout the entire assigned lesson. (Please refer to pages 82-83 in the lesson book.)
Musicality/Dynamics

The student was unable to play many or all previous items accurately and is unable demonstrate dynamics. The performance was choppy and may not have been completed.

In addition to SOME of the previous items being performed accurately, the student has paid LITTLE attention to such details as dynamics. The performance is somewhat choppy but was completed.

In addition to the previous items being MOSTLY performed accurately, the student also has paid attention to MOST details such as dynamics. The performance was MOSTLY smooth and errors did not take away from the overall performance.

In addition to all of the previous items being performed accurately, the student also paid attention to details such as dynamics. The performance was smooth throughout and had good flow from beginning to end.
Materials/Preparedness

The student forgot all materials but still attended the lesson.

The student had his/her instrument but forgot the music. In addition, the student came down for the lesson but I may have had to remind him/her. If I had to remind the student, he/she was NOT ON TIME

The student had MOST everything that was needed for the lesson. In addition, the student came down for the lesson, but I may have had to remind him/her. If I had to remind them, they were NOT ON TIME.

The student had everything that was needed for the lesson. In addition, the student came down for the lesson without my reminding the student and he/she was ON TIME.
