Features

Level 1

Face: Eyes are too big or two small and placed in improper positions. Nose, ears, and mouth are not proportionate.
Level 2

Face: Eyes are close to the right size and placed close to their actual positions. Nose, ears, and mouth look somewhat proportionate.
Level 3

Face: Eyes are appropriately sized and in proper position. Nose, ears, and mouth are proportionate.
Level 4

Face: All features are proportionate. All features are well-drawn and combine to create a realistic whole.
Hatching

Level 1

Improper technique is used for hatching and cross-hatching. Hatch line directions are poorly chosen and take away from the accuracy of the picture. A limited number of different values is created due to very few variations in number of lines and space between lines.

Cross-hatching was not used.
Level 2

Proper technique is used for hatching/cross-hatching, but with inconsistency. Hatch line directions are sometimes chosen incorrectly and create the wrong effect. A few different values are created with slight variations in number of lines and space between lines.

Some cross-hatching used.
Level 3

Proper technique is used for hatching and cross-hatching. Hatch line directions are chosen with care. Different values are created with variations in number of lines and space between lines.
Level 4

Proper technique is effectively used for hatching and cross-hatching. Hatch line directions are chosen with care and create the right effect. A wide range of different values is created with variations in number of lines and space between lines.
Presentation

Level 1

The proportions and features of the face are not accurate, which keeps the picture from looking like its subject. Very poor use of shading causes the picture to lack any hint of depth.
Level 2

Slight inaccuracies in the proportions and features of the face/body combine to make the picture look somewhat unrealistic. Some improper use of shading causes the picture to lack depth in certain areas.
Level 3

The proportions and features of the face/body combine to create an accurate representation of the subject. Proper use of shading creates the right depth in different areas of the picture.
Level 4

The proportions and features of the face/body combine to create an accurate, almost lifelike representation of the subject. Expert use of shading creates the right depth in different areas of the picture.
Use of Grid

Level 1

Did not divide face using guidelines.

Did not use the grid to help in the drawing and placement of features.

Grid lines were too dark to erase and were left remaining on finished drawing
Level 2

Constructed grid lines to divide the face but they are too large and/or too inconsistent in size to be useful.

Made some use of grid lines to draw and place facial features.

Grid lines were too dark but an attempt to erase them was made.
Level 3

Constructed mostly appropriate grid lines to divide the face.

Used the grid to draw and place many features correctly.

Some remaining grid lines are faintly visible.
Level 4

Constructed grid lines that are the correct size and uniform.

Highly effective use of grid lines to draw and place accurate features.

No remaining grid lines are visible.
