Research study critique
Familiarize yourselves with existing research and theoretical writings pertinent to the assigned article. Find the best empirical (data-based) article(s) or an assigned article that addresses this topic. Describe the article you reviewed, its methods and findings, strengths and weaknesses. Make recommendations for ethical considerations in the application to patient care, including concrete suggestions (e.g., additional theoretical considerations, highlighting relevance of specific variables or alternative measures for key constructs, ethical models for decision making) for the ethical application to your practice.

Scholarly Standard

Lists methodologies, goals of the study and findings clearly and with pertinent details. Then discusses ethical considerations and impact on care

Substantial inaccuracies in reporting the study methodologies, variables or findings. Elaboration of evidence is insufficient or not understandable to the reader. Basically, an opinon paper with faulty descriptors.
Meets Expectation

Doesn't fully address other viewpoints and/or doesn't clarify own views. Writer's perspective is acceptable, but not easy to follow.
Exceeds Expectation

Elaborates on study using professional sources, and mentions other viewpoints, but does not clarify or support own views. Writer's perspective is acceptable but not sequentially formatted.
Excellent

Elaborates fully on topic acknowledging authors' findings and supports with professional sources/explanations. Has defined the concepts discussed, statistics used and uses clear and effective examples.
Raises important questions

The topic posed is only part of the total. Does student find interesting angles from which to explore? All assignments are expected to reflect original thoughts and interpretations of the information. Direct quotations should be kept to a minimum and used only when they enhance the message you are trying to convey.
Below Expectation

Direct quotations exceed 20%. Fails to raise any important questions related to the topic assigned. Does not meet the criteria of the assignment.
Meets Expectation

Direct quotations are between 10-15%. Raises questions related to the topic, but may not provide reader with adequate evidence for why these additional questions should be considered.
Exceeds Expectation

Direct quotations are between 5-10%. Raises important questions relevant to the assigned topic, and answers them with evidence from professional sources.

Peer Review

A peer reviewer prior to final submission must review all papers. When the paper is submitted to the instructor it must also include the peer review and evidence that corrections were made where necessary. The peer review should include grammatical, style, and substantive recommendations. Where possible provide your peer electronic copies of your references. Peer reviewer must complete a rubric and submit it.
