Descriptive Essay Rubric Descriptive Writing Rubric Students will describe a place of their choice by using four of their five senses to create a descriptive essay. Writing will be graded on capitalization, punctuation, use of main idea and supporting details, spelling, and grammar usage. Main Idea & Details	Excellent Each paragraph contains a main idea and at least three related details.	Good Some paragraphs contain a main idea and some realted details.	Needs Improvement The paragraphs do not contain a clear main idea or related details.
Description- 5 Senses Using Simile	Excellent The essay contains the use of at least 4 of the five senses and includes descriptive words.	Good The essay contains 2 or 3 descriptions using the five senses and descriptive words.	Needs Improvement The essay contains 1 description using the five senses and few descriptive words.
Spelling-High Frequency Words	Excellent The essay is free of spelling errors of high frequency words.	Good The essay has 1 or 2 spelling errors of high frequency words.	Needs Improvement The essay has 3 or more spelling errors of high frequency words.
Rough Draft	Excellent Rough draft completed with errors corrected and conferenced with peer.	Good Rough draft completed but no conference with peer.	Needs Improvement No rough draft or rough draft not completed in time allowed.
Correct format	Excellent The writing was written using correct form based on the format given in class. Paragraphs were indented and writing was placed on correct lines.
