Writing I Research Paper Writing I Research Paper Students chose a research topic and created a thesis that could be either explanatory or argumentative; conducted research, and wrote their information into a paper. Thesis	Poor There is a too general or/and unclear thesis.	Good The thesis is clear but to general.	Excellent The thesis is clear, precise, and exact.
Length	Poor The paper is less than 4 1/2 pages long, not counting the works cited page	Good The paper is 4 1/2- 4 3/4 pages long, not counting the works cited page.	Excellent The paper is 5 pages long, not counting the bibliography and cover pages.
Sources	Poor The paper has less than 3 sources and/or none of the sources come from the database.	Good The paper 4 sources and/or not all sources are appropriate.	Excellent The paper includes 5 sources that were required
Reasoning	Poor The paper does not support the thesis, and the reasoning or evidence is weak or unrelated to the thesis. Facts are not presented in a logical order.	Good The paper is organized by a thesis, but the reasoning or evidence is weak or is not presented in a logical order.	Excellent The paper is organized by a thesis and supported by sound reasoning and/or evidence which is presented in a logical order.
Mechanics	Poor Many errors in spelling, capitalization, punctuation, sentence structure, word choice, grammar, which cause paper to be unclear.
