Oral Presentation 9: Poetry Due 3/15/11 
Students will present a song or poem and examine lyrics/lines using poetic terms studied in class. Students may choose to work alone or in groups of two to three people. All content of songs or poems must be appropriate for a sixth-grade audience. Students will provide a typed copy of the song/poem to be projected on the board and have this self-graded rubric to hand in before the project or lose 10 points.

Intro; Rhyme and Meter

Excellent

Group begins with an engaging introduction of song or poem including hook, title and author, and a thesis statement which covers the main points of the presentation. Group then discusses poetic structure: rhyme scheme, kinds of rhyme, number and type of stanzas, melodic devices, foot and meter.
Good

Group introduces song or poem including title and author; one or two of the following missing: discussion of rhyme scheme, number and type of stanzas, melodic devices, foot and meter.
Fair

Group neglects or insufficiently explains more than three of the following: song title, song author, discussion of rhyme scheme, number and type of stanzas, melodic devices, foot and meter.
Figurative Language/Imagery/Symbols

Excellent

Group thoroughly examines all examples of figurative language, imagery and symbolism in the song/poem and correctly uses terms learned in class.
Good

Group examines 90% of the examples of figurative language, imagery and symbolism in the song/poem and correctly uses terms learned in class.
Fair

Group examines less than 80% of examples of figurative language, imagery and symbolism in the song or poem and/or does not correctly use terms learned in class.
Meaning

Excellent

Group speculates on how imagery, figurative language, symbolism and melodic devices contribute to the meaning and theme of the song/poem, providing a well-supported interpretation.
Good

Group provides an interpretation which is 90% supported by the poetic devices in the lyrics.
Fair

Group provides an interpretation only partially (80% or less) supported by poetic devices in the lyrics.
Presentation Skills/Organization

Excellent

Group chooses a suitable song/poem which produces an engaging and well-organized presentation, demonstrating excellent presentation skills.
Good

Group chooses a song or poem that does not contain rich figurative language and/or imagery and/or meaning to discuss. Group produces a presentation which shows some organization, engages the audience 80% of the time. Group demonstrates good presentation skills.
Fair

Group chooses an unsuitable song/poem, or produces a presentation which is lacking in organization, audience engagement, and/or presentation skills.
