Thesis	Poor There is a general but unclear thesis and/or the thesis is not in the correct place.	Good The paper is organized around a coherent and well-documented thesis, and the topic selected addresses the assignment. The thesis is correctly placed.	Excellent The paper is organized around a critically considered, original, and well-documented thesis; the thesis is correctly place following MLA format.
Format	Poor The paper is missing a cover page or a bibliography, or did not follow MLA format	Good The paper has a body and a bibliography, but it may be lacking a cover page. The paper follows MLA format.	Excellent The paper has a cover-page, a body, a bibliography and follows MLA format.
Length	Poor The paper is less than 5 pages long, not counting the bibliography and cover pages.	Good The paper is less than 6 pages long, not counting the bibliography and cover pages.	Excellent The paper is 6 or more pages long, not counting the bibliography and cover pages.
Sources	Poor The paper has less than 6 sources and many of them are not scholarly acceptable or pertinent.	Good The paper has 6 sources, but they are not all scholarly acceptable or pertinent.	Excellent The paper includes a minimum of 6 pertinent, scholarly acceptable sources.
Reasoning	Poor The paper does not support the thesis, and the reasoning or evidence is weak or unrelated to the thesis. Facts are not presented in a logical order. Excellent The paper is organized by a thesis and supported by sound reasoning and/or evidence which is presented in a logical order.
Mechanics	Poor The paper is not consistent in standard English usage or lacks coherent paragraphs. Transitions are lacking, & the title, introduction, or conclusion could be improved.	Good The paper mostly uses standard academic English and sentence construction. Paragraph transitions could be improved. The title, introduction, or conclusion could be improved.	Excellent The paper uses standard academic English usage and sentence construction, coherent and well-ordered paragraphs, paragraph transition, and a title, introduction, and conclusion.
Citations	Poor There are numerous errors on the Works Cited page.	Good There are less than 3 errors on the Works Cited page.	Excellent Citations are correctly formatted following MLA documentation style.
