Historical Fiction Concepts

Excellent

My tavern scene includes 10 accurate facts about Colonial times and they are interwoven into my scene. My facts are varied (i.e. I have facts from many different areas like foods, utensils, manners, etc.).
Good

The Colonial time period is mentioned in my tavern scene, but not interwoven. Story line doesn't flow very well and facts are clumped. I only have 9 historical facts or 1 is inaccurate. I use many of the same facts that are from the same categories, like food or utensils.
Close

My tavern scene contains 7-8 facts or 2-3 are inaccurate. I only use one or two categories.
Needs Improvement

My tavern scene has 5-6 facts OR more than 4 facts are inaccurate. My use of research is very limited.
Poor Effort

My tavern scene has less than 4 facts or more than 5 are inaccurate. I chose all facts from the same research category.
Word Choice

Excellent

The words used are striking and natural (e.g. “wondered” instead of “thought”). Powerful use of verbs and historically accurate words, phrases, and slang from the period.
Good

Has some fine word choices and generally good language. Some parts may be routine. Should try to use more expressive words.
Close

The words used are acceptable but ordinary. Should try to use more expressive words.
Needs Improvement

Word choice is uninspired, colorless, and dull or sounds like author is trying too hard to impress. Some words may be used incorrectly.
Poor Effort

The same words are repeated over and over and over. Some words may be confusing to the reader.
Sentence Fluency

Excellent

Sentences are clear; they begin in different ways; some are longer than others; no fragments; paper is a delight to read out loud.
Good

Sentences are mostly well-constructed, some minor errors. The tavern scene marches along, but doesn’t dance.
Close

Scene has a few problems with fragments or awkward sentences.
Needs Improvement

Sentences are often awkward or mechanical; little variety in length; may have many sentences that begin with the same word.
Poor Effort

Scene is tough to read because almost all of the sentences are incomplete, run-ons, and/or awkward.
Figurative Language

Excellent

My use of figurative language was imaginative and the language used is something that would be historically accurate like in the example "making a sound like a muffled drum." I did not use the easiest type of figurative language, I went outside my comfort area and took a risk.
Good

I used figurative language, but it could have been more imaginative. It may have been routine. I could have taken more of a risk.
Close

The figurative language used was acceptable, but ordinary. The wording is border line and probably would not have been used in that time period.
Needs Improvement

Figurative language is uninspired and unimpressive or the language I chose would not have been used in the time period. For example,
"it was as lame as..."
Poor Effort

Figurative language was not included in my tavern scene (0).
Conventions and Editing

Excellent

I made one grammatical or punctuation error.
Good

I made some errors, perhaps by taking risks and using interesting words or sentences. There are less than 5 grammatical or punctuation errors.
Close

My spelling is correct on common words. Some errors in grammar and punctuation. There are 6-7 grammatical or punctuation errors.
Needs Improvement

Frequent errors are distracting, but do not interfere with the meaning of my paper. There are 8-10 grammatical or punctuation errors.
Poor Effort

Many errors in grammar, capitalization, and spelling make the scene hard to read. There are more than 10 grammatical or punctuation errors.
