	Effective Reader understands and easily follows the writer’s expression of ideas. 4 pts	Adequate Reader understands<BR> writer’s ideas. 3 pts	Marginal Reader occasionally has<BR> difficulty understanding<BR> or following the writer’s ideas. 2 pts	Inadequate 1 pts
Thesis	Effective Presents a clearly focused thesis.	Adequate Uses the assigned topic to establish a thesis statement.	Marginal Addresses the assigned thesis, though the focus may shift.	Inadequate Does not attempt to address assigned topic with a thesis.
Organization	Effective Establishes a clear and logical organization.	Adequate Uses an identifiabl organizational plan.	Marginal Shows some evidence of an organizational plan.	Inadequate Contains no organization or ideas.
Word Choice	Effective Exhibits varied and precise word choice. Figurative language is applied and used appropriately.	Adequate Exhibits appropriate word choice. Figurative language is implied.	Marginal Exhibits a narrow range of word choice, often including inappropriate selections.	Inadequate Exhibits weak and/or inappropriate words.
