Well constructed narrative with paragraphs that follow a logical sequence; balanced dialogue, narration, and action.

Both intro and concluding paragraphs highly successful. Reader was "hooked" from the very beginning, and given a strong closure. It is clear why the student ended the his/her story this way.

Information is organized into a narrative with paragraphs that follow a sequence.

Both intro and concluding paragraphs written, but one or the other was lacking (the hook or the wrap-up).

There is some organization, but may be difficult to follow at times.
Autobiographical with a spattering of narrative elements.

Missing either a clear intro or concluding paragraph; OR, both paragraphs were included, but did not "hook" reader AND left reader "hanging."

There is an absence of narrative elements or an over-emphasis on informational text. Written like an autobiography without a sense of story.

Memoir missing both intro and concluding paragraphs.

Imagery used exceptionally well; reader can not only identify and relate, but also "feel" as if he/she were in the event. Clealy shows and not tells about the event.

Imagery used effectively; reader can identify and relate to event and/or memoirist. Author begins to "Show" not "tell" readers their experience.

A few sensory details but mostly limited to visual imagery.

Little or no sensory details.

Student used in-class time wisely. Memoir was turned in on time and met or exceeded minimal length requirement. Student was on task during all work days.

Student used class time wisely; however memoir might have been late or did not meet minimal length requirement. Student was on task most of the time.

Student did not use class time wisely. Memoir was either late or did not meet minimal length requirement. Student was off task.

Student wasted class time; did not meet deadlines; did not meet minimal length requirement. Student was off task and disruptive to others.
