Composition

– there should be a
primary element of design supporting the composition (rule of thirds/golden mean would be primary layout with an element such as rhythm, light, or directional lines) supporting overall layout

Below Basic

BELOW BASIC
The objects do not fill the page completely. Objects are placed randomly - feels haphazard.
Basic

BASIC
Objects fill the page completely. The composition has been somewhat considered with some evidence of thought to supporting elements.
Proficient

PROFICIENT
The page is filled completely with some of the objects going off the page. Objects are arranged according to the rule of thirds, or golden mean. Evidence of supporting elements enhance the composition.
Advanced

ADVANCED
The composition is organized according to the rule of thirds or golden mean with a clear focal point, and is skillfully supported by elements of design that create a cohesive overall feel.
Proportion and Space

There is consideration given to the proportion of
objects (scale and size in comparison to each other) and objects relationship to each other in terms of space (overlapping, negative spaces) and possibly meaning

Below Basic

BELOW BASIC
Few of the objects are proportionally correct from height to width. There is no overlapping or consideration of negative spaces.
Basic

BASIC
Most of the objects are proportionally correct from height to width. There is some overlapping of objects and reference to negative spaces between them.
Proficient

PROFICIENT
All the objects are proportionally correct in reference to each other. They are realistically overlapping with consideration given to spaces between objects.
Advanced

ADVANCED
All of the objects are proportionally correct in reference to each other and the background. Work illustrates sensitivity to spaces between and around objects.
Shading and Shape

Include a range of 6-8 values that describe the three-dimensional forms. The contours of the forms and textures are accurately rendered through use of value, shading techniques and/or contour line.

Below Basic

BELOW BASIC
Few of the objects are shaded and most of the objects do no reflect the actual contours of the objects.
Basic

BASIC
Objects are shaded and most of the objects reflect actual contour of objects. Evidence of 5-6 values.
Proficient

PROFICIENT
Highlights reflect actual highlights from shading, and all of the objects reflect actual contours. Evidence of 6-8 values.
Advanced

ADVANCED
Varied value range of darks, highlights, and mid tones, and all of the objects reflect the actual contour (shape). Uses shading to create edges and lines (vs. drawing them) – use eraser as a drawing tool both to create highlights, shapes, lines and, atmospheric perspective/spatial awareness.
Craftsmanship/Effort, Perserverance

The work is well crafted.
