Conventions Capitalization	Poor Rarely capitalizes the first word of a sentence, names of people, and the pronoun I.	Fair Inconsistently capitalizes the beginning of sentences, names, and the pronoun I.	Good Always capitalizes the beginning of sentences, peoples' names, and the pronoun I.	Excellent Capitalizes the beginning of sentences, as well as proper nouns and title.
Conventions Punctuation	Poor Rarely uses correct punctuation at the end of sentences.	Fair Inconsistently uses the correct punctuation marks at the end of sentences.	Good Always uses punctuation marks at the end of each sentence.	Excellent Uses correct punctuation at the end of each sentence; uses a variety of sentences such as declaritive, interrogative, and exclamatory.
Genre Expository	Poor Writing structure and organization are not apparent.	Fair Writing has an inadequately developed structure; listing of facts with minimal descripition of character.	Good Writing has a well developed structure and organization is apparent; sentences adequately describe character.	Excellent Writing has a proper structure, including topic sentence and supporting detail; sentences are complex and thoroughly describe character.
