Scale Accuracy	Advanced Pitches are correct and in tune both ascending and descending with beautiful intonation in all registers.	Proficient Pitches are correct with a few errors both ascending and descending. There may be small intonation problems.	Basic Most pitches are correct but student has problems with aspects of the scale being performed.	Below Basic Many incorrect pitches, intonation problems and problems maintaining proper registers.
Tone Quality	Advanced Tone is full and well projected. A truly characteristic sound for the instrument.	Proficient Considerable use of projection and fullness of tone but still somewhat short of a mature sound.	Basic Limited projection - tone is poor or range is limited due to the need for a stronger embouchure and/or breath support.	Below Basic Sound is totally lacking in quality due to a poorly formed or weak embouchure/grip and/or no breath support.
Rhythm and Tempo Accuracy	Advanced Steady pulse with accurate rhythms at all times.	Proficient Steady pulse with few rhythmic errors.	Basic Pulse is unstable with major rhythmic errors.	Below Basic No evidence of steady pulse.
Overall Preparation	Advanced Student performs the scale with control and fluidity. Excellent preparation is evident throughout.	Proficient Student performs most of the material accurately. Preparation is good.	Basic Student has prepared less than half of the test.	Below Basic Student is not prepared
