Participation: A Grade Explanation 
In the end, participation makes up 20 percent (20%) of your overall grade in the class: New Mexico History. With this rubric, I do my best to explain your final grade in this category.

Student has more than 5 absences equating to more than 8 hours of missed time in the classroom!
Good

Student has 3 or 4 absences equating to approximately 6 hours of missed time in the classroom.
Excellent

Student has few absences with a maximum of 4 hours of missed time in the classroom.
Outstanding

Student has NO ABSENCES!!!!

Remember: Your voice, your opinions, your thoughts are valuable. The entire classroom benefits when you add your voice to the daily discussions that drive the class curriculum.

Student rarely adds to classroom discussions and only infrequently raises his/her hand.
Good

Student often contributes to classroom discussion. Student raises his/her hand occasionally.
Excellent

Student consistently adds meaningfully to classroom discussions. Student is pro-active, raising his/her hand often.
Outstanding

Student not only adds meaningfully to classroom discussions and conversations but can be counted on to contribute thoughtful new perspectives to those discussions/conversations. Student always has a hand up and is ALWAYS ready to take leadership roles in discussions/conversations.

This category focuses on a students readiness to answer questions when called upon

Student is almost never prepared to answer questions correctly when called upon by the teacher.

Student is most often prepared to answer questions correctly when called upon by the teacher.
Excellent

Student is almost always prepared to answer questions correctly when called upon by the teacher.
Outstanding

Student is ALWAYS prepared to answer questions and can be counted on to answer those questions correctly, thoughtfully and insightfully.
Attentiveness
20 %

This category focuses on a student's attentiveness in the classroom. REMEBER: to meaningfully add to the classroom environment, a student must listen to the thoughts, opinions, and contributions of others!!!

Poor

Student almost always appears to be disengaged from the conversations and classroom discussions that drive the classroom curriculum. Student more often than not seems to have "drifted off" and is unable to answer questions when called upon because of his/her failure to pay attention.
Good

Student is often engaged. Student listens carefully to the thoughts, opinions and ideas of other students as well as the teacher, "drifting off" only occasionally.
Excellent

Student is almost always engaged. Students listens carefully to the thoughts, opinions and ideas of other students in the class as well as to the teacher.
Outstanding

Student is ALWAYS engaged with peers and teacher during the course of the class. Student is ALWAYS ready with appropriate answers to questions.
Preparedness & Punctuality

This category seems obvious!

Poor

Student generally ALWAYS arrives late. Student most often arrives without supplies.
Good

Student frequently arrives late. Student frequently comes to class without the supplies necessary to be successful in the class: pen, pencil, notebook paper, notebook, highlighter, etc.
Excellent

Student ALMOST ALWAYS arrives on time. Student ALMOST ALWAYS has the supplies/resources necessary for success in the classroom: pen, pencil, notebook paper, notebook, highlighter, etc.
Outstanding

Student ALWAYS arrives on time and is always prepared. Materials and necessary resources (this includes but is not limited to: pen, pencil, notebook paper, notebook, highlighter, etc.)
