Work appears to be thoughtless or rushed. Work is very repetitive and ideas seem cliched, impersonal or unoriginal.
Developing

The poems are creative, but don't demonstrate a variety of approaches.
Established

Poems are creative and thoughtful. They are carefully written, but development or craft could go further.
Excelling

Poems are creative. It is evident that the poet put thought into their words and conveyed their ideas and emotions.
Literary Devices Reflection

For each poem, the student explained in writing the characteristics of the poem and how it creates imagery.

Beginning

The reflections did not include any literary devices such as imagery, sound effects and rhyming pattern.
Developing

The reflections use some literary devices.

The poems incorporates several literary devices which demonstrate mastery.

The poems and portfolio are attractive in terms of design, layout, and neatness.
Excelling

The portfolio is exceptionally attractive in terms of design, layout and neatness.
Neatness

Beginning

The project is not presentable. The text has a lot of erasures, sheets are creased and project was not on portfolio.
Developing

The project has more than 3 erasures, more than half of the sheets are creased but submitted on in a portfolio.
Established

The project has 1-2 erasures or some sheets are creased but was submitted in a portfolio.
Excelling

The portfolio project is free from any erasures and sheets are not creased. It is apparent that the student took care in producing it.
Grammar & Punctuation

The student demonstrates understanding and control of the rules of the English language.

Beginning

There are numerous spelling, punctuation, or grammar errors.
Developing

The poet's intended meaning is muddled by some spelling, punctuation or grammar errors.
Established

Some spelling, punctuation, or grammar mistakes are evident, but do not diminish meaning.
Excelling

Proper use of modern English spelling, punctuation and grammar are employed consistently throughout portfolio.
