"Incognito" Observational Charcoal Self-Portrait 
Students will create a well crafted and highly detailed Observational Realistic Self-Portrait by looking in a mirror and referring to a reference photograph of themselves that was created from a photo-shoot designed by the individual student. Students employ the five drawing skills that were developed during the first semester to achieve this cumulative assessment piece. Students must have a definite light source, broad value range, and great attention to detail.

Correct Proportions of Face are Rendered with Accurate Likeness

Excellent

Drawing reflects careful observation of the object studied with accurate realistic proportion, accurate contour edges, accurate placement of inner spaces. Details are obvious in the lines that are drawn and there is a clear likeness.
Strong

Careful observation is reflected in the drawing with practically accurate proportion, contour edges, and nearly accurate placement of inner spaces. Details could be more excellent.<BR>
Strong likeness.
Good

Drawing shows some accuracy in observation with some accuracy in parts and proportion. Contour edges and spaces lack excellence but are still good. Some details are missing. Likeness is evident.
Moderate

Drawing has not been pushed and lacks accuracy in correct proportion. Spaces are indicated but not accurately placed. Likeness could be much stronger.
Weak

Drawing is very inaccurate in regard to realistic proportion and placement of spaces. Little indication of likeness.
Poor

Drawing is incomplete. Poor in regard to realistic proportion, edges, spaces and detail. No likeness indicated.
Perception of Lights and Shadows

Value scale is broad with consistent blended shading

Excellent

Drawing demonstrates an excellent understanding of value and includes 8-10 values from the white of the paper to black. Shading is well blended with consistency throughout the work. Medium is used with refinement and control
Strong

Drawing shows strong understanding of value with 6-8 values that include white of the paper and black. Shading is mostly well blended and mostly consistent in the work. Very strong use and understanding of medium.
Good

Drawing shows good understanding of value with 4-6 values that include white of the paper and black. Shading could be more blended and consistent. Good use of medium.
Moderate

Drawing shows moderate understanding of value with 4-5 values that seem to be "grayed out". Shading lacks consistency. Medium is only moderately understood.
Weak

Drawing is weak with regard to understanding of value. 3 or fewer values are used with inconsistent shading style. Student lacks understanding of how to use medium.
Poor

Drawing does not show evidence of understanding of value or of attempt to shade. very poor use of the medium.
Perception of Relationships

Lights and darks in relationship to one another give the illusion of 3/D space

Excellent

Drawing shows excellent understanding of relationship of light to shadows and clearly gives the illusion of 3/Dimensional space.

Drawing shows strong understanding of relationship of light to dark and strongly gives the illusion of 3/Dimensional space.

Work is well-crafted and in great condition: clean, neat, overall highly aesthetic. Definite light source is obvious with amazing detail. Concept is exceptionally communicated.
Strong

Work is strongly crafted and condition is clean, neat, most areas are aesthetically pleasing. Light source is strong and definite. Much detail. Concept is obviously communicated.
Good

Craftsmanship is good but some areas do not lend to the overall effectiveness of the composition. Light source not always obvious throughout. Good detail. Concept is good.
Moderate

Drawing lacks neatness and has not been thoroughly cleaned-up. Overall composition is moderately effective. Light source is barely obvious.
Not much detail. Concept is nebulous.
Weak

Craftsmanship is very weak. Drawing has not been cleaned-up. Weak consideration of the whole.There is no obvious light source. Details are lacking. Student did not explore concept of Incognito.
Poor

Drawing is very poorly crafted, dirty, with no attention to the effectiveness of the whole. Total disregard for light source and detail. Student made no attempt to create a concept for this piece.
Studio Ethics

Every minute of class time was used wisely. Constant self-challenge and reflection.

Student consistently used every minute of class time wisely; constantly challenging self to reflect, revise, and employ studio habits of mind.
