Explanation	Exceeds Provides more than 3 push factors and more than 3 pull factors. Explanation is consistent with classroom learning. Students use vocabulary from class in their writing properly.	Meets Provides at least 2 push factors and 2 pull factors. Explanation is consistent with classroom learning. Students attempt to use vocabulary, but it isn't used correctly.	Approaches Provides some explanation with little connection to push and pull factors. Students do not use vocabulary from class in their writing.
Persuasive	Exceeds Students uses persuasion to convince Monarch exploration is necessary.	Meets Student attempts to use persuasion to convince the Monarchc exploration is necessary.	Approaches Letter is written as reasons. Little persuasion is used to convince the Monarch the exploration is necessary.
Format	Exceeds Student has all 5 parts of a letter. These include heading, greeting, body, closing and signature.	Meets Student is missing one of the 5 parts of a letter.	Approaches Student is missing two or more of the 5 parts of a letter.
Conventions	Exceeds Student has taken the time to correct any convention mistakes. Their writing is very legible.	Meets Student has a few errors, but their writing is legible. Readability isn't impacted by their errors.	Approaches Student has many convention mistakes. Their handwriting isn't legible. Their letter is very difficult to read.
Handed in On Time	Exceeds Students hand in assignment on the due date: Oct 18th.	Meets Students hand in assignment on Oct 19th.	Approaches Students hand in assignment on or after Oct 22nd.
