	BELOW Below the Standard 1 pts	APPROACHING Approaching the Standard 2 pts	MEETS Meets the Standard 3 pts	EXCEEDS Exceeds the Standard 4 pts
Holds Instrument Enter description	BELOW Consistently holds instrument incorrectly with right hand on top.	APPROACHING Hesitates and thinks about which hand to use on top; sometimes holds it correctly.	MEETS Consistently uses left hand on top.	EXCEEDS Automatically uses left hand on top.
Fingering Enter description	BELOW Has difficulty placing fingers to block holes correctly.	APPROACHING Hesitantly places fingers on holes. Has to check finger placement.	MEETS Regularly fingers correctly with the occasional error.	EXCEEDS Confidently and correctly fingers the holes.
Note Recognition	BELOW Begins to recognize musical symbols; needs a great deal of assistance.	APPROACHING Can read some notes hesitantly; requires time to decipher. Needs some assistance.	MEETS Reads most notes correctly with little assistance.	EXCEEDS Can sight read correctly and with confidence.
Articulation Breath Control & Tonguing	BELOW Has difficulty controlling breath and placement of tongue on mouthpiece.	APPROACHING Demonstrates some control of breathing and sometimes uses tonguing.	MEETS Regularly controls breathing and tonguing techniques.	EXCEEDS Masterful control of breathing and tonguing techniques.
Rhythm	BELOW Can follow and play a simple rhythm with some success.	APPROACHING Can follow and play a simple rhythm with success.	MEETS Can follow and play a complex rhythm with some success.	EXCEEDS Can follow and play complex rhythm with success.
