Questions or prompts are directly answered. The students explains their thoughts when necessary to support his/her answers/responses to the journal prompts. The student shows understanding and is able to communicate his/her ideas.
Approaching Standard
The student attempts to answer most journal prompts.
Student’s responses are limited in detail and depth.
Student generally attempts to understand and communicate ideas in writing.
Writing is occasionally insightful and shows some understanding of ideas.
Beginning Standard
The student seldom attempts to understand and communicate ideas in writing.
Writing lacks insight and understanding of ideas. There are no examples to support the student's response.

Required number of entries are completed.
Volume of writing shows evidence that student used time effectively.
Approaching Standard
One entry is missing, and/or
volume of writing shows evidence that student did not always use time effectively.
Beginning Standard
Several entries are missing, and/or volume of writing shows evidence that student usually did not use time effectively.
Effort and Quality
Meeting Standard
It is evident that the student used most of the time alloted to him/her. The format for a journal entry was followed for all entries. All entries are legible and neat and the page has some decoration.
Approaching Standard
It is evident that the student used at least half of the time allotted. Some of the entries are written in the correct format. The entries are legible and neat. Most of the pages have decoration.
Beginning Standard
It is evident that the student used very little of the time allotted to them. Very few of the entries are in the correct format. The entries are not legible and they are sloppy.
Spelling
Meeting Standard
No excuse words are spelled correctly 90% of the time. Student shows effort to spell most words correctly.
Approaching Standard
No excuse words are spelling correctly 75% of the time. Student leaves words misspelled.
Beginning Standard
No excuse words are spelled correctly only 60% of the time. Student leaves words missing or misspelled.
