The student stayed on topic throughout the entire essay and each paragraph had a clear focus.

The student stayed on topic throughout most of the essay and the paragraphs seemed mostly focused.
Fair (65-74.9)

The student stayed on topic throughout some of the essay but some parts were unclear or difficult to follow.
Poor (64.9 and below)

The student did not stay on topic at all or was so disorganized the reader could not understand the topic of the essay.
Mechanics

Excellent (100-85)

The student had little to no any spelling and/or grammar errors.
Good (75-84.9)

The student had some spelling and/or grammar errors but they did not affect the reader's ability to understand the essay.
Fair (65-74.9)

The student had many spelling and/or grammar errors which may have confused the reader at times.

The student had multiple spelling and/or grammar errors that made the assignment very difficult to understand.
