Explorer Essay Students were asked to write an essay on an assigned explorer. They had to introduce the explorer, his journey and also, explain whether or not this explorer's journey was successful. 	Excellent (100-85) 4 pts	Good (75-84.9) 3 pts	Fair (65-74.9) 2 pts	Poor (64.9 and below) 1 pts
Content	Excellent (100-85) The student answered all of the essay questions with many, relevant details.	Good (75-84.9) The student answered most of the essay questions with some relevant details.	Fair (65-74.9) The student answered some of the essay questions with a few relevant details.	Poor (64.9 and below) The student did not answer the essay questions or used many irrelevant details.
Organization	Excellent (100-85) The student stayed on topic throughout the entire essay and each paragraph had a clear focus.	Good (75-84.9) The student stayed on topic throughout most of the essay and the paragraphs seemed mostly focused.	Fair (65-74.9) The student stayed on topic throughout some of the essay but some parts were unclear or difficult to follow.	Poor (64.9 and below) The student did not stay on topic at all or was so disorganized the reader could not understand the topic of the essay.
Mechanics	Excellent (100-85) The student had little to no any spelling and/or grammar errors.	Good (75-84.9) The student had some spelling and/or grammar errors but they did not affect the reader's ability to understand the essay.	Fair (65-74.9) The student had many spelling and/or grammar errors which may have confused the reader at times.	Poor (64.9 and below) The student had multiple spelling and/or grammar errors that made the assignment very difficult to understand.
