Copy of Making a map and legend 
Students will have 20 minutes to create a map. It will show how to get to their home from school or how to get to the library from the classroom. It will use at least 3 reference symbols and a compass as well as a legend that describes what the symbols on the map represent.

Poor

Map project is missing many necessary elements. It may be missing name and title of map on the top, missing arrows or directions, and/or includes less than 2 symbols, and/or includes less than 2 symbol explanations in legend, and/or is missing a compass.
Accuracy

Good

Compass is represented accurately as shown on blackboard. Map accurately indicates how to get to the destination.
Fair

Either compass is not accurately represented as shown on blackboard or map does not accurately indicate how to get to destination
Poor

Compass is not accurately represented as shown on blackboard and map does not accurately indicate how to get to destination
Neatness

Good

The map is labeled (e.g. "my map to the library," "my map to the books," or simply "map") and the legend is also labeled (the word "key" may be substituted for the word legend).
Fair

Either the map is labeled but not the legend or vices-verse.
Poor

Both the map and the legend are not labeled at all.
