Body position and movement

Need Improvement

Body position nearly vertical. Student barely advances and frequently has to stop.
Fair

Body is at less than a 70 degree angle with the head at an incorrect position. Student struggles to advance.
Good

Body is almost perfectly horizontal and the head may be slightly positioned incorrectly (head too far back or chin to close to the chest). Propulsion is very inconsistent.
Excellent

Body is perfectly horizontal with a neutral head position. Proper propulsion is seen during every stroke.
Arms and Hands

Need Improvement

Arms don't have any coordination whatsoever.
Fair

Arms don't hug the body and the pull is very inconsistent. Hands come out of the water as well.
Good

Arms come up too high past their shoulders and ears. Pull is inconsistent.
Excellent

Arms hug the body and stop at the shoulder position. At the shoulders, the student points their hands outwards and pushes the water downwards returning the hands to the starting position.
Leg Action

Need Improvement

Knees are completely apart and the kick is not producing any propulsion. You ask yourself, "what on earth is this student doing?" :)
Fair

Student does an uneven kick with one leg lagging behind the other. Knees are often times everywhere and the kick does not produce effective propulsion
Good

Inconsistent kick with knees coming out of the water. Propulsion is decent but not great.
Excellent

Knees stay 6-12 inches apart and the ankles point outwards while performing each kick. Knees should not come out of the water. The kick should provide a noticeably strong propulsion.
Breathing and Timing

Need Improvement

Student has trouble breathing because their head goes under water. Their coordination is completely off.
Fair

Breathing is erratic and their arms and legs are working at different times. The result is an uncoordinated inefficient stroke.
Good

Breathing is fairly relaxed but their arms and legs are not in perfect unison.
Excellent

Breathing is relaxed and comfortable. Arms and legs are working simultaneously producing an effective and beautiful stroke.
