Clay Mask - 8th Grade 
Students use the slab hand building method with a mask mold to make a clay mask expressing their own unique creativity.

The student proved to be able to modify or alter the basic mask form but with poor success.

The student successfully modified or altered the mask form as in the nose, eyes, lips, mouth expression, and etc.

The student successfully
modified or altered the form and created a unique mask like no other in class.
Originality/Creativity

Attempts Grade Level

The student failed to create any type of unique characteristics with clay or other decorative materials.
Progressing to Grade level

The student attempted one or two unique characteristics as expression with eyes and mouth but no other decorative materials. Copied others.
Grade level

The student created a mask using all characteristics from clay leaving the mask unique or used decorative materials to finish the piece. Some copying ok.
Grade Level with Excellence

The student created a unique mask like no other in the class using clay only and or decorative materials.
Craftsmanship/Refinement

Attempts Grade Level

The student showed no evidence of refining the form. Mask not smoothed. Back Edge of mask and other areas not cleaned up.
Progressing to Grade level

The student made some progress in cleaning up. Facial area smoothed but the back edge of mask is curved in and out with clay pieces and cuts.
Grade level

The student cleaned up facial area of mask completely. The back edge still needs refinement somewhat.
Grade Level with Excellence

The student totally cleaned facial and back edge of the mask.
Craftsmanship/Firing

Attempts Grade Level

The student created an air bubble which completely destroyed the whole mask to a million pieces.

The student created an air bubble but the mask survived in at least one or more larger pieces.

The student created a mask with no air bubbles but some pieces may have fell off due to poor scoring.

The student created a mask with no air bubbles and all scored pieces stayed on.
Finish/Painting

The student applied the paints with missed areas being evident. White specks. Shows no thought process of applying paints.
Progressing to Grade level

The student applied the glazes with many less areas being obviously missed. White specks still showing. Some thought of how to apply paints but poorly done.
Grade level

The student shows evidence of having a plan for painting the mask. Lines are defined and cleanly done. Few white specks.
Grade Level with Excellence

The student had a evident plan in painting the mask. Textures and or lines are done with purpose. Overall skill handling is excellent. No white specks.
Finish/Aesthetics

Attempts Grade Level

The student threw the mask together and is unpleasing to view. No evidence of a thought out design.
Progressing to Grade level

The student attempted with some design to create a pleasing art form but failed to bring overall expressive features out in mask.

The student's mask shows evidence of a thought out design and is pleasing to view or in showing the feeling behind the mask.
Grade Level with Excellence

The student's mask shows excellent use of design and is beautiful to behold or expressive in showing the mood of the mask.
