ELD Classroom Teacher Reference Guide 
Use this rubric to grade ELD students on a pass/fail basis (students at proficiency levels of Beginning, Early Intermediate, and Intermediate). The sub-categories are to be used as a guideline to determine if the student is working at his/her capacity. Students at and Early Advanced or Advanced level should be graded according to classroom standards.

What do your students understand,and how do they express themselves?

Beginning

Students may be able to: repeat some speech sounds in context, identify some common vocabulary in response to pictures, understand and follow simple commands, tell a story using isolated words.
Early Intermediate

Students typically: use simple words, follow one/two step instructions, use common vocabulary, use appropriate verb form in responses, use sentences with a subject and predicate.
Intermediate

Students typically: follow directions, use common vocabulary, use appropriate verb forms, tell stories with in coherent sequences with details and basic sentence structure.
Reading

Do your students understand your handouts and text book?

Beginning

Students may be able to: recognize some simple words, match commonly used nouns to pictures, recall minimal details from a simple story.
Early Intermediate

Students typically: begin to use words in context appropriately, answer literal comprehension questions from a simple story.
Intermediate

Students typically: demonstrate knowledge of simple synonyms, antonyms and root words, recognize the sequence of events in a passage.
Writing

What should student work look like?

Beginning

Students may be able to: use capitalization and punctuation in abbreviations, attempt to write about a topic- but response is minimal.
Early Intermediate

Students typically: use capitalization and punctuation in abbreviations correctly, attempt to write about a topic- but response is minimal- containing some isolated English words.
Intermediate

Students typically: use articles and pronouns correctly, use idiomatic qualifiers, write a sentence in response to a picture though there may be many errors, write an essay (may be disorganized, repetitive)
Effort

How much should I expect from my ELD students?

Beginning

Student should be attempting to do as much work as possible with modifications, including learning new, basic vocabulary that is subject specific.
Early Intermediate

Student should be attempting to do as much work as possible with modification, including learning new vocabulary and attempting to participate in classroom discussions and group work to some degree.
Intermediate

Student should be doing all assigned work at a modified level, learning new vocabulary, and participating in classroom discussions and group work.
Teacher Modifications

What are a couple of ways I can help my ELD students right now?

Beginning

Very basic vocabulary building, use pictures whenever possible, use texts in native language when possible, allow the use of dictionaries and notes.
Early Intermediate

Emphasize new vocabulary, short answers, true and false, use texts in native language when possible, allow dictionaries and notes, short writing assignments.
Intermediate

Student should attempt grade level work, grades should take into account language issues, native language texts when possible, dictionaries, notes, short writing assignments.
