Students will compose a 24 bar composition in ABA form either in four parts or a melody with chord accompaniment for a grade.

Format

A 24 measure composition using ABA form is written in either four parts (SATB) or piano melody with chord accompaniment in a key with up to five sharps or flats, includes key signature, time signature, common chord modulation, double bar line at end, and roman numeral analysis below the composition. (figured bass) All passing and neighbor tones are labeled

Excellent

Student is able to write key signature, time signature, barlines, and figured bass properly. All passing and neighbor tones are labeled correctly. ABA Form is correctly used.
Proficient

Student is able to write key signature, time signature, barlines, figured bass and passing / neighbor tones properly with few or minor errors. ABA form is used with few or minor errors.
Adequate

Student is able to write key signature, time signature, barlines,and passing / neighbor tones and figured bass with some errors. ABA form is used with some errors
Poor

Student is not able to write key signature, time signature, barlines,and passing / neighbor tones and figured bass properly. ABA form is not used.
Composition

Melody includes a variety of steps and leaps using only notes in the key and proper tonic and dominant placement. Composition uses at least 3 secondary chords. Smooth voice leading is used. The composition must begin and end on a I chord. The composition uses at least 2 passing tones and 2 neighbor tones.

Rhythm

Rhythm patterns include a variety of note values including dotted quarter + eighth, dotted eighth - sixteenth and various sixteenth note groupings. Each bar has 4 counts.

Student is able to write rhythm patterns using a variety of note values with the appropriate number of beats in every measure.
Proficient

Student is able to write rhythm patterns using a variety of note values and 4 beats per every measure with few or minor errors.
Adequate

Student is able to write rhythm patterns using a variety of note values and 4 beats per every measure with some errors.
Poor

Student is not able to write rhythm patterns using a variety of note values and 4 beats per every measure.

All notes, stems, and beams are written correctly.
