Commentary Comments should try to accomplish a variety of purposes such as identifying the main idea, author's purpose, tone, evidence, structure, diction, questions, reflections, opinion/facts, inferences, literary devices, reflection, etc.	Distinguished Comments accomplish a great variety of purposes. Understanding is evident. Thoughtful connections made to other texts or life experiences. Commentary is original and thought-provoking.	Accomplished Comments accomplish a few key purposes. Understanding is evident. Connections are made to other texts or life experiences. Original commentary	Proficient Comments are present but lack a diversity of purposes AND/OR connections are made to other texts or life experience. Understanding is mostly evident. Commentary lacks uniqueness.	Developing Comments would only help a limited class discussion. Understanding is unclear. Connections don't make sense or are incorrect. Commentary is not unique.	Emerging Comments are present BUT too infrequent to demonstrate understanding.	No Score Marginal comments are inappropriate OR no marginal comments are present.
Consistency Close reading should be evident from start to finish.	Distinguished Consistent markings throughout text (not bunched).	Accomplished	Proficient Inconsistent markings throughout text. Markings may be bunched together.	Developing	Emerging Very few and sporadic markings throughout text (indicating the entire text was not read for annotation).	No Score Markings appear to be random.
