	Excellent 5 pts	Above Average 4 pts	Average 3 pts	Below Average 2 pts	Poor 1 pts
Mechanics/grammar	Excellent - Journal entry is neat and legible. - No spelling, punctuation, and/or grammatical errors.	Above Average -Legible handwriting -1-2 combined errors in spelling, grammar, and/or punctuation.	Average -Legible handwriting - 3-4 combined errors in spelling, grammar, and/or punctuation.	Below Average -Handwriting difficult to read. -5 combined errors in spelling, grammar, and/or punctuation.	Poor -Unable to read handwriting. -6 or more combined errors in spelling, grammar, and/or punctuation.
Critical thinking (3x point value)	Excellent - Responses show the student has put a great deal of thought into what he/she writes. - The ideas are complex and show thinking that is "outside the box." - Understands the prompt/passage read.	Above Average -Entry is complete. -Student demonstrates depth of thought, but may not be pushing his/ her ideas toward original ways of looking at the topic.	Average -Student has a complete entry -Entry is a surface-level interpretation of the topic.	Below Average -Entry feels rushed and lacks much depth of thought. -Entry does not respond to all aspects of the prompt.	Poor -Entry does not pertain to the assigned prompt.
Coherence/organization	Excellent - Good support with no redundancy. - Long enough to clearly answer the prompt/reflect on the material. - Clear and easily understood -Logically organized	Above Average -Long enough to answer the prompt -Clear/understood by the reader -Shows some repitition or some material not fully organized	Average -Contains some development of ideas and a basic structure.	Below Average -Entry is not long enough to clearly answer the prompt/ reflect on the material. -Very little organization.	Poor -Entry is unstructured -Topic is not developed.
