Format and Textual Evidence	Poor Students incorrectly uses the MLA format Multiple formatting errors.Organization and evidence has no connection. Or no textual evidence is present.	Fair Students correctly use the MLA format but more than 3 errors occur. Organization is unclear, hard to follow, and does not connect to thesis. Textual evidence is randomly used or incorrectly included.	Good Students correctly use the MLA format with less than 3 errors. Organization is clear, easy to follow, and defends stated ideas and comparisons. Textual evidence is clearly connected and correctly used.
Content	Poor Lack of thesis. Paper shows no development of thought or understanding of novel. Lack of or no comparisons present. Unfocused or underdeveloped ideas abound.	Fair Solid thesis, decent defense of thesis, and under developed writing and comparisons. Thought and focus are evident, but paper may be difficult to follow at times.	Good Excellent thesis, strong defense of thesis, and well developed writing and comparisons. Thought and focus are evident, lending itself to easy to follow and understood paper.
Grammar	Poor Paper is in the draft stage. Multiple errors occur, demonstrating lack of effort or editing. Incosistent style and voice.	Fair Paper needs final editing. More than 3 grammatical erros occur. Style is inconsistent and/or voice changes.	Good Mechanically sound paper. Less than 3 grammatical erros occur. Style is consistent and voice constant.
