To Kill a Mockingbird Character Collage
Students were given a choice of ten characters from TKM on which to focus. They were to complete a graphic organizer detailing the character's ideas, weaknesses, feelings, vision or hopes, and strengths. They were to chronicle the history of the character and to predict their future. While focusing on their unique qualities, students were also required to give examples of those qualities from the text. In addition, students were directed to include a quotation either said by their character or about their character. And, finally, students were to present all of these ideas on a poster board or foam board in a collage art form using multimedia.

CONSTRUCTION OF COLLAGE

SUPERIOR A+

Outstanding execution of characterization via choice of symbols and images. Meets all construction criteria incl size, placement, design, texture, neatness. Something unique makes your collage stand out among all the others.
EXCELLENT A

Well executed characterization via choice of symbols and images. All required elements incl size, design, placement, texture, neatness. Overall effect is attractive and character is identifiable through appropriate representative details.
GOOD B

Satisfactory execution of characterization throughout but there might be an issue with required elements incl size, design, placement, texture or neatness. Evidence a plan is in effect. Aesthetically pleasing overall.
FAIR C

Some ideas are executed okay but there is likely a problem with the finished product. Size of collage may not meet requirements. Limited use of space; might have some empty spaces on the backing.
POOR D

Obviously lacking a plan. Lacks clarity or graphic appeal. May not clearly identify character; some items may not be ideal choices to enhance character identity or personality. May be a poster rather than a collage.
CREATIVITY

SUPERIOR A+

Outstanding use of creative abilities reflecting depth of thought and effort. Used unique methods to present character's strongest traits. Use of color and texture added greatly to overall project.
EXCELLENT A

Excellent use of creative abilities showing much thought and effort. Found unique ways in which to present most important aspects of character's traits. Used color and texture to full advantage. Dynamic elements.
GOOD B

Good use of creative abilities showing thought and effort to define character's features. Finished product is cohesive, attractive, and dynamic.
FAIR C

Some creative elements are present in layout, in choices of items used, and/or in scope of the assignment, but they do not make a whole and/or quality is lacking.
POOR D

Little or no creative elements present. Appears to have items slapped onto a backing without a plan or regard to overall effect or meaning.
CHARACTER ANALYSIS

SUPERIOR A+

Outstanding detailed portrait of character. Well over the minimum of 15 items required demonstrating the full dimension of the character's development. Items displayed are so closely identified with character as to insure instant recognition.
EXCELLENT A

Excellent detailed portrait of a character. At least 15 items that demonstrate the full dimension of the character's traits, behaviors, and personality. Character is easily identifiable by the items chosen and displayed.
GOOD B

Detailed portrait of a character. Minimum of 15 items to flesh out the character in terms of traits, behaviors, emotions, beliefs, etc. Character is recognizable by the items displayed.
FAIR C

Fair portrayal of character. Most items are easily identified with the character. Perhaps one or two items are difficult to connect to the subject of this collage. Some items are too obvious as to gender, age, or type as opposed to character traits, behaviors, or beliefs. As a result, character is two-dimensional at best.
POOR D

Nondescript portrayal of chosen character. Generic items chosen rather than specific ones that would flesh out character through traits, behaviors, or beliefs. Flat, one-dimensional characterization.
QUOTATION

SUPERIOR A+

Outstanding choice of quotation that truly represents the essence of the character. It is the best choice to depict the character's personality.
EXCELLENT A

Excellent choice of quotation that makes the character come alive and clearly represents who the character is.
GOOD B

Good choice of quotation that is representative of the traits, beliefs, or actions of the character giving insight into his/her pesonality.
FAIR C

Mediocre choice of quotation that did not fully represent the character's traits, beliefs, or actions or give more insight into his/her personality.
POOR D

Not a relevant quotation for your character as it does not represent the character's traits, beliefs or actions; fails to draw any insight into the character or his/her personality.
FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS

SUPERIOR A+

All directions followed without exception.
EXCELLENT A

Directions followed as required.
GOOD B

Directions mostly followed but might have a minor flaw.
FAIR C

Directions not completely followed. Something may have been overlooked or omitted.
POOR D

Errors resulting from a lack of following directions adequately. Blatant lack of regard for instructions, i.e., fewer than 15 relevant items beyond quote and character name.
