Explanation of Scene	Poor Student gives no reasons for his/her opinion of the most interesting scene.	Fair Student only gives one reason for his/her opinion of the most interesting scene.	Good Student gives two or more reasons for his/her opinion of the most interesting scene.
Character	Poor No examples from the story were used to show a connection. Or, the examples could be incorrect.	Fair One or two examples from the story were used to show a connection. Examples are correct.	Good Three or more examples from the story were used to show a connection. These examples support the connection the student is trying to portray.
Letter Form	Poor Student does not include the date, greeting, closing, or signature in the letter.	Fair Student is missing one part of a friendly letter form. (date, greeting, body, closing, signature)	Good The student includes all parts of a friendly letter. (date, greeting, body, closing, and signature)
Mechanics	Poor The student does not use correct grammar and punctuation. The letter is hard to read.	Fair The student has three or more grammar and punctuation mistakes.	Good The student's grammar and punctuation is virtually flawless. (only one or two mistakes)
