Fair The thesis statement tells the reader what the essay is about, but it is not the last sentence of the introductory paragraph.	Good The thesis statement tells the reader what the essay is about and is the last sentence of the introductory paragraph.
Four Contrasts	Poor Less than four contrasts are shown and little or no supplemental information is given.	Fair Four contrasts are given but are not expanded into individual paragraphs, or there is not sufficient supporting information.	Good Four contrasts are given and are expanded into individual paragraphs with supporting information.
Mechanics	Poor The essay has more than five mechical errors.	Fair The essay has two or three mechanical errors.	Good The essay has few, if any, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, grammar, or usage errors. Transitional words are used to smoothly flow from one paragraph to another to introduce each contrast.
