Fair The student shows that he/she possesses some knowledge of the literature and the time periods that we have discussed in class.	Good The student shows that he/she possesses a great deal of knowledge about the literature and time periods that we have discussed in class.
Explanation of information presente	Poor The student gives very little or no explanation of the characteristics and literature presented in the essay.	Fair The student gives some explanation of the characteristics and literature presented but there is clearly a need for more reasoning and detail.	Good The student presents each time period with sufficient explanations and details as well as gives descriptions and explanations of the literature discussed during those time periods.
Transitioning	Poor The student shows that he/she does not posses the knowledge of how each time period transitions into the next.	Fair The student shows that he/she has some knowledge about how each time period transitions into the next.
