Patterns of Inheritance/Organism Design
Patterns of Inheritance/Organism Design
Students design an imaginary organism to show patterns of inheritance in several chosen traits. The traits must include examples of complete dominance, incomplete dominance, codominance, multiple alleles for a trait, and epistasis. Students will demonstrate understanding through visual description of phenotypes, explanation of inheritance, and description of a habitat/environment where the organism is well-adapted for living.

Inheritable Traits
Minimal
Less than 10 traits described
Many or all traits from list of examples
Missing more than one of the required patterns of inheritance
Basic
10-14 Traits described
May include more than 10 from the list of examples
Missing one of the required patterns of inheritance
Proficient
15 Traits described
No more than 10 from the list of examples
At least one each of:
complete dominance, incomplete dominance, codominance, multiple alleles, and epistasis
Advanced
More than 15 traits described
Many traits not from the example list
Multiple examples of inheritance other than complete dominance
May include some traits showing more than one pattern of inheritance
Evidence of Crosses
Minimal
Punnett square showing a cross between heterozygous parents given for less than 10 traits with 2 alleles, those with multiple alleles show all possible alleles in the cross
Few crosses accurate
Basic
Punnett square showing a cross between heterozygous parents given for 10-14 traits with 2 alleles, those with multiple alleles show all possible alleles in the cross
Most crosses accurate
Proficient
Punnett square showing a cross between heterozygous parents given for each trait with 2 alleles, those with multiple alleles show all possible alleles in the cross
All crosses accurate
Advanced
Punnett square showing a cross between heterozygous parents given for each trait with 2 alleles, those with multiple alleles show all possible alleles in the cross
All crosses accurate
Includes a discussion of expected outcomes and ratios of results
Visual Diagram/Drawing
Minimal
Some phenotypes of traits represented, may be missing all for a given trait
Visual of complete organism shows some traits and likely does not match results of coin toss
Basic
Most phenotypes of traits represented, with at least one phenotype per trait
Visual of complete organism shows most traits and may not directly correspond to results of coin toss
Proficient
All phenotypes of all traits represented
Visual of complete organism included after traits determined by coin flip (roll of die for multiple alleles)
Advanced
All phenotypes of all traits represented
Visual of complete organism included after traits determined by coin flip (roll of die for multiple alleles)
Clearly shows alignment with corresponding genotypes
Written Description - Traits
Minimal
Several traits not addressed
Lack of connection between structure and function
Basic
Structure of traits described, but not all functions
Proficient
Structure of traits described
Function of traits described in context of structure (connection made between the two)
Advanced
Structure of traits described
Function of traits described in context of structure (connection made between the two)
Discussion included relating how traits working together may have certain function
Written Description - Environment
Minimal
Environment description incomplete, leaving out some characteristics and little connection made to organism
Basic
Description of environment includes general characteristics of the habitat (ground cover, water availability, plant life) with some connections made to organism
Proficient
Description of environment includes general characteristics of the habitat (ground cover, water availability, plant life)
Specifically addresses organism's shelter, food source, and possible predators
Advanced
Description of environment includes general characteristics of the habitat (ground cover, water availability, plant life)
Specifically addresses organism's shelter, food source, and possible predators
Discusses phenotypes within the population that would allow for adaptation due to changes in the environment
