Compare & Contrast Essay Rubric 
Students were to write a literary analysis essay using two poems as their base texts. They were to compare and contrast the two poems for points of analysis identified by a TPCASTT of each poem with and emphasis on the author's use of connotation and figurative language,shifts in the text and their themes.

Establishes a clear and logical organization using proper essay structure. Essay has multiple paragraphs: introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. The introduction has a clear thesis statement that guides the essay, paragraphs have topic sentences, claims, evidence and development of key points. Analysis is evident.
Adequate

Uses an identifiable
organizational plan. with proper essay structure. Essay may only have paragraphs but has a clear introduction and conclusion. There is a weak thesis statement, topic sentences are weak and claims are not supported with appropriate evidence or development. Lacks analysis.
Marginal

Shows some evidence of an organizational plan with an attempt at an essay structure but may have errors (i.e. no indentation and minimal paragraphing). There is a weak introduction, poor thesis or unclear thesis, paragraphs lack cohesion, topic sentences are missing, there is minimal evidence of claims, minimal development of ideas.

Fails to organize ideas.

development with a topic sentence, specific and relevant details and examples from both texts. Accurately develops all points. Compares and Contrast elements of both poems after a thorough analysis of each poem individually. Chooses strong evidence to support claims.
Adequate

Has focused but occasionally uneven development; incorporates a topic sentence with some specific detail from both texts. Develops points, although it may not have most appropriate details and evidence or details from both texts. There is minimal comparing and contrasting of both poems.
Marginal

Has some development but lacks specific details; may be limited to a listing, repetitions,
or generalizations. May have topic sentence, but fails to make a concrete claim or use evidence to support all claims. There is a weak attempt to compare and contrast the two poems
Inadequate

Demonstrates little or no development; usually lacks details or examples or presents irrelevant information. May only address 1 or none of the items in the prompt. There is no development of ideas.
