Investment / Effort

Exceeds Standards

Writing feels authentic and emotionally honest. It is the author's personal best. Obvious investment of time, effort, and energy.

***If applicable, author has attempted to break out of the "crystal comfort palace" of old habits.
Meets Standards

Writing feels authentic. May fall short of author's personal best, but shows clear investment of time and energy.
Almost Meets Standards

Writing may reflect author's lack of effort or personal investment in the project. Not his/her best work.
Does Not Meet Standards

Writing reflects a lack of investment. Done to fulfill minimum requirements.
Protagonist

Exceeds Standards

Protagonist makes me care. The reader is encouraged to like / invest in him or her. He/she pursues a goal throughout the story which also fulfills a deep need. I am engaged by his / her journey.
Meets Standards

Protagonist is generally likeable. He/she pursues a goal throughout the story which also helps fulfill a need, but this need may lack definition. I am engaged by the character's journey.
Almost Meets Standards

Protagonist falls short of likeability. He/she may lack enough positive characteristics to make me care, or may be "too perfect". Deep need may be lacking. Character may not progress / go on a journey.
Does Not Meet Standards

Little to no attempt to create a likeable protagonist. Character exhibits no deep need and remains static / unchanged by events of story.
Conflict / Tension

Exceeds Standards

Protagonist faces a powerful internal or external obstacle to meeting his/her goal and fulfilling his/her need, ultimately working through it. Tension keeps me wanting to read on.
Meets Standards

Obstacle is present, but may need to be strengthened. Character works through obstacle. I want to read on.
Almost Meets Standards

Obstacle is too easily overcome by protagonist. Perhaps an outside force swoops in to solve the problem for the protagonist, providing an easy resolution.
Does Not Meet Standards

Lack of conflict / obstacle. Little to no tension.
Image-Based Writing

Exceeds Standards

A large portion of the writing is specific and image-based rather than thought-based. "Show, don't tell" is employed well throughout the piece.
Meets Standards

At least a few scenes are notably visual. Some moments which are "told about" should be shown instead.
Almost Meets Standards

Little visual detail. More telling than showing.
Does Not Meet Standards

No attempt to write in images. Reads like a summary, not a piece of creative writing.
Resolution

Exceeds Standards

Provides a meaningful, appropriate ending that resolves the conflict and brings a sense of closure.
Meets Standards

Provides an appropriate ending that resolves the story's conflict.
Almost Meets Standards

Ending is abrupt; conflict may be resolved, but closure is lacking.
Does Not Meet Standards

Ending provides no resolution; story feels unfinished.
Language & Syntax

Exceeds Standards

Engages the reader with thoughtful word choices and varying sentence structures.
Meets Standards

Language appropriate and somewhat thoughtfully chosen. Sentence structures somewhat varied.
Almost Meets Standards

Reflects a lack of attention to word choice or sentence structure. Repetitive or simplistic.
Does Not Meet Standards

Language is overly simplistic or frequently inappropriate to subject matter. Little to no sentence variety.
Formatting

Exceeds Standards

Follows correct format for genre of piece as discussed previously.

(Font, size, spacing, etc.)
Meets Standards

Follows correct format with a few errors.
Almost Meets Standards

Deviates noticeably from format.
Does Not Meet Standards

Deviates distractingly from format.

(Major issues with font, spacing, etc.)
Conventions

Exceeds Standards

Proper use of spelling, capitalization, punctuation and grammar is employed consistently throughout the writing assignment.
Meets Standards

There are a few errors, however it does not take away from the overall quality of the writing assignment.
Almost Meets Standards

Many errors muddle the overall effectiveness of this piece.
Does Not Meet Standards

There are so many conventional errors that it is difficult to comprehend the meaning.
