	Absent 50 pts	Minimal 60 pts	Developing 75 pts	Competent 85 pts	Excellent 100 pts
Thesis	Absent The paper lacks a thesis statement.	Minimal Thesis is unclear or a non-issue.	Developing Thesis is underdeveloped.	Competent Thesis is clearly formulated, but lacks creativity and/or complexity.	Excellent Thesis is creative and well developed.
Observations	Absent Makes no specific or descriptive observations of the work.	Minimal Makes few specific or descriptive observations of the work.	Developing Makes some observations of the work, but they remain vague and generalizing; they do not tie to broader claims or ideas.	Competent Observations of the work are often specific and descriptive, but they may not tie clearly to broader claims or ideas.	Excellent Observations of the work are highly specific, descriptive, and clearly tied to broader claims that support the paper's main ideas.
Analysis	Absent Does not analyze the work in light of visual observations.	Minimal Analysis is limited; may resemble a "laundry list" of features unconnected with larger ideas or may get off-topic.	Developing Analysis of the work is attempted but is not sufficiently supported by visual and critical observations.	Competent Draws together visual and critical observations to support analysis, but may not do so consistently or persuasively.	Excellent Draws together visual and critical observations to support a persuasive, clear analysis that ties in to course material as relevant.
Writing	Absent Writing is inarticulate and entirely ineffective.	Minimal Writing has serious technical flaws; it may lack specificity or logical structure; meaning remains unclear.	Developing Writing has moderate grammatical or other flaws, is poorly edited, and/or uses vague language that leaves meaning unclear.	Competent Writing is competent, mostly grammatically correct, and generally effective, but may lack rhetorical force.	Excellent Writing is fluent, articulate, and specific; it advances the argument with persuasiveness and rhetorical verve. Contains no or extremely few grammatical errors.
