Quantity of Writing	Poor The writer wrote one short paragraph.	Fair The writer constructed a two paragraph piece, but could have gone into more detail.	Excellent The writer constructed more than two paragraphs, and the writing was detailed.
Shows Not Tells	Poor The writer used mundane verbs and told the scene rather than showed the scene.	Fair The writer attempted to use dynamic verbs and somewhat achieved showing not telling.	Excellent The writer used dynamic verbs throughout the writing and effectively showed the scene.
Thesis	Poor The writing does not have a thesis and therefore cannot have supporting details.	Fair It is difficult to determine the thesis of the writing and/or the details do not effectively support it.	Excellent There is a clearly stated thesis and sufficient supporting details.
Sensory details	Poor Little attempt was made to incorporate the five senses into the essay.	Fair Some attempt was made to incorporate the five senses into the essay.	Excellent Sensory imagery was integrated throughout the writing.

Formatting	Poor There are errors in the heading, or double-spacing was not done, or the font is the wrong size.	Fair There was one error in the heading or the formatting of the paper was incorrect.	Excellent There were no errors in either the heading or the formatting of the writing.
