Identifies/Defines Vocabulary Words	Excellent Student identifies a number of vocabulary words throughout entire article and defines each of them.	Good Student identifies some vocabulary words but does not define any/all of them.	Fair Student identifies a few words and may or may not define them.	Needs Improvement Student does not identify or define vocabulary words.
Responds to Text	Excellent Student makes a number of notes, questions, comments, and personal connections throughout entire article.	Good Student makes some questions and comments.	Fair Student makes few questions and comments.	Needs Improvement Student makes not comments or questions.
Writes Paragraph Response	Excellent Student writes a paragraph with at least four complete sentences and which contains the main idea of the article, responses to questions printed on the article, and some personal reactions or reflections to the article's content.	Good Student responds to most of the items, but paragraph is either incomplete or choppy.	Fair Student write a few sentences but no paragraph.	Needs Improvement Student writes no paragraph.
