Flat foot contact
Short stride
Wide stride (student runs with feet wider than shoulder width apart)

Legs near full extension
Upper body very vertical, no leaning forward at all

Heel-toe contact with the ground
Knee angle between 45 to 90 degree
Top of quadricep almost parallel to ground

Heel-toe contact when lightly running
High heel recovery (coming up toward buttocks)
Top of quadricep parallel to ground
Knee angle 90 degrees
Arm/Upper Body Position

Precontrol

High guard arm position (arms come up toward shoulder level)
Upper body completely vertical
Control

Arms at middle guard (they are swung at lower chest, mid-torso level)
Upper body less vertical, no leaning forward
Utilization

Arms at low guard (natural running position)
Arms in opposition to the legs
Elbows bent not quite 90 degrees; partially extended during the run
Upper body with slight forward lean for momentum
Proficient

Arms in complete opposition to legs
Upper body with necessary forward lean
Complete elbow extension
Elbow at 90 degrees
